[YA] An Introduction to Recording Waterlogged Wood

November 13 @ 09:00 - 17:00

Join York Archaeology Conservation’s Steve Allen (BA, MA, MCIfA) for the return of his CIfA accredited one-day introductory course on waterlogged wood. This course is perfect for archaeologists who require a working knowledge of waterlogged wood, including how to identify it, record it and the valuable information it can reveal. The course is aimed at field archaeologists at all levels but it is also accessible to students who have completed some field-based training.

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes for the course include

  • Recognise the significance of wood and timber assemblages.
  • Learn methods to recover (or sample) material and pack it safely.
  • Develop basic wood recording skills, including cleaning, recording and describing material accurately.
  • Understand how to use wood recording data to inform the interpretation of archaeological sites and features.
  • Understand the requirements of specialist analyses, including species identification, radiocarbon (¹⁴C) sampling, dendrochronological sampling and conservation, and know when to seek advice or support.
  • Apply these skills by recording a sample piece of timber during the course.

Spaces are limited, so secure your place as soon as possible. Each course date has a waitlist. If there is enough interest, we may arrange additional sessions.

A catered ‘sandwich-style’ lunch will be provided as well as tea and coffee. If you have any dietary requirements please contact Jemima Cowey at Jcowey@yorkat.co.uk at least two weeks prior to the course.
