The Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) is the only club for young people interested in archaeology! With a network of local clubs across the UK where 8–16 year olds can get their hands mucky doing real archaeology, each club is run by a team of adult volunteers.
There are currently several Young Archaeologists’ Club Branches across Yorkshire. Most meet once a month, usually on a Saturday, and they are a great way for young people between 8 and 16 to learn more about archaeology in their area and make new friends.

YAC Branches cover a huge range of different activities. Members might find themselves, finding out how archaeologists excavate, trying a hand at historic crafts such as spinning and weaving or flint knapping, visiting interesting archaeological or heritage sites, trying out food from different periods of time, learning how to identify artefacts, process finds, analyse pottery, survey graveyards and much, much more!
Each branch organises an action-packed programme of activities, field trips and events. More information about Young Archaeologists Clubs can be found on the YAC website.

16-25 Year Olds

Although the opportunities are not so obvious, there are a myriad of ways to get involved in archaeology – for one you can be a Young Leader at a local Young Archaeologists’ Club between the ages of 16-18, and a full blown leader after you are 18!!
There are also a number of courses available to study archaeology in, some are based in Yorkshire – have a look at https://www.universityarchaeology.co.uk/ for more information.

Many affiliated groups will happily take on young adults as excavators, post-excavation duties etc, however it is best to check with each individual society. Alternatively you can contact the CBA Yorkshire committee at web@cba-yorkshire.org.uk who will be able to assist you in finding the best thing for you.
Historic England and the Council for British Archaeology have also launched a scheme called the Young Associate Network – you can apply to join for free at https://form.jotform.com/231792316143352
