SUMMARY:Yorkshire’s hidden toxic legacy of historical metal mining: lead\, floods and health
DESCRIPTION:Mark G. Macklin\, Professor Emeritus of River Systems and Global Change\, University of Lincoln \nYorkshire’s historical lead mines have left a legacy that extends far beyond the abandoned mine sites themselves. Lead-contaminated sediments have been carried downstream and stored in river channels and floodplains\, where they can persist for centuries. When floods occur\, these sediments can be remobilised and redistributed across farmland\, gardens and other areas where people live and work\, creating risks to human\, animal and ecosystem health. \nDrawing on new research mapping the legacy of lead mining across Great Britain\, this lecture explores the scale and distribution of this largely hidden environmental hazard\, with a particular focus on Yorkshire. It will examine how toxic\, lead-contaminated sediments move through river systems\, how flooding can increase exposure\, and how contamination can enter ecosystems and food chains. It will also consider why current approaches that focus mainly on water quality and individual mine sites may underestimate the true extent of the problem\, and how climate change and increasing flood risk could make this historical legacy an emerging challenge for human\, animal and ecosystem health. Finally\, the lecture will explore what can be done to reduce exposure and manage this persistent environmental hazard. \nJoint Lecture with “PLACE” and  Royal Geographical Society\, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Committee

SUMMARY:[KMA] The Forgotten War: The Civil War in Yorkshire 1642-1643
DESCRIPTION:By Mike Turpin. \n  \nMost accounts of the English Civil War tend to concentrate on the southern counties between Oxford and London with perhaps a passing reference to the “Battle of Adwalton” near Bradford and of course refer to the decisive battle on Marston Moor. This talk looks at the start of teh Civil War and argues taht the war started in Yorkshire wtih Charles coming North to claim his arsenal at Hull. The talk then describes the engagements between the Royalists and Parliamentarians in mainly West and East Yorkshire culminating in the Battle of Adwalton.

SUMMARY:[YPS] The Melsonby hoards: a window on the nature of power in Late Iron Age Yorkshire
DESCRIPTION:A chance discovery by metal detectorist Peter Heads\, in 2021 at Melsonby\, North Yorkshire\, led to the excavation of one of the largest hoards of Iron Age metalwork ever discovered in Britain. Including 28 iron tyres\, a range of chariot and wagon parts\, two copper-alloy vessels\, horse harness for around 14 ponies\, spears and many other items\, these deposits surpass in quantity and quality any contemporary metalwork assemblage from Britain and Ireland. This lecture explores the nature of the Melsonby hoards and how these remains provide important new insights into the nature of power\, display and identity in the Iron Age. The talk will discuss the possible hypotheses around why these massive acts of conspicuous consumption took place and how the hoards have the potential to transform our understanding of the nature of vehicles and forms of power and display in the Late Iron Age. The lecture emphasises the benefits of collaboration between the finder\, archaeologists and museums\, and is the result of collaboration between Durham University\, The British Museum\, Historic England and range of specialist researchers.

SUMMARY:[ArchUK] This is Archaeology: Learning from a burned landscape: How the 2025 Fylingdales wildfire will change our understanding of moorland archaeology.
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Miles Johnson. \n  \nThe post-fire landscape is readable in a way rarely seen outside of excavations. This lecture gives a sense of the vast numbers of known and previously unrecorded archaeological features that are now visible in granular detail. They include types of monuments that are rarely seen and many features we don’t yet understand. At the same time\, these remains are now exposed to continuous erosion from wind and rain\, it is a resource we are rapidly losing. \n  \nIn 2025\, a wildfire devastated eighteen square kilometres of the North York Moors. It burned away soils\, severely impacted farming and tourist businesses\, and led to the closure of open access and major rights of way. Fire has permanently altered Fylingdales Moor\, and parts of it will recover to be different habitats than before. The fire was started by human carelessness\, but the reasons it became the biggest wildfire ever in North Yorkshire are more complex; influenced both by historical land management and the past use of the moor for military training. More fundamentally this event was driven by climate change. \n \n  \n  \nThe need to quickly restore a huge area of landscape and to record and stabilise the remains within it poses a challenge that we aren’t fully prepared for. There are no business-as-usual options for an archaeological response\, and circumstances have forced different approaches to help capture and understand the landscape exposed at Fylingdales. There is much to learn from and about the post-fire landscape but equally\, wider lessons in how we need to adapt archaeology to the reality of a changing climate.
