SUMMARY:Chariots\, Treasure and Power: Secrets of the Melsonby Hoard
DESCRIPTION:The Yorkshire Museum’s brand new exhibition\, Chariots\, Treasure and Power: Secrets of the Melsonby Hoard\, presents the unprecedented discovery of the largest hoard of Iron Age metalwork to ever be found in Britain\, the Melsonby Hoard. \nAround 20% of the 800 objects discovered outside the village of Melsonby in North Yorkshire in 2021\, including fragments of vehicles\, adornments from horse harnesses\, weapons and hundreds of other individual items that make up the momentous discovery will be displayed together for the first time. Taking centre stage\, ‘The Block’\, an amalgamation of materials that were found fused together weighing over 150kg and measuring nearly a metre across\, allowing visitors to see this extraordinary structure. \nThe objects will be showcased alongside digital resources and interactives\, inviting visitors to get up close to the discovery and dive into the archaeological\, scientific\, and conservation work shaping future research. \nChariots\, Treasure and Power marks the initial stages of research on the hoard\, outlining the current understandings of Iron Age Britain and exploring life before the arrival of the Romans\, and asking the questions\, why was the hoard buried\, why were the objects burnt and destroyed and who might have owned these lavish items? \nThe significance of the discovery is heightened by its proximity to the Iron Age fortifications at Stanwick\, a major centre of power for the Brigantes under Queen Cartimandua. The Melsonby Hoard itself reflects the far‑reaching connections of these influential rulers\, with objects revealing links to Denmark\, the Mediterranean\, and beyond. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to see one of Yorkshire’s most amazing archaeological discoveries up-close!

SUMMARY:Northern ladies: a celebration of Lady Anne Clifford 350 years after her death - and her contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:2026 is the 350th anniversary of the death of Lady Anne Clifford\, the last of the Cliffords to bear that name. Her struggle to retain her inheritance has attracted admiration over the generations: for some she is a formidable Northern Lady\, for others a feminist icon. \nThe Record Series of the Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society is also publishing in the autumn a collection of previously unedited letters by Lady Anne\, to Lady Anne and about Lady Anne edited by Professor Jessica Malay. The volume also contains the memoir of Lady Anne’s secretary\, George Sedgewick (1618-85)\, published in full for the first time. \nWe are therefore holding what will be a dual celebration with a conference in Skipton Town Hall on Saturday 31 October. We have a stellar cast of speakers\, all expert in their fields. We shall launch Professor Malay’s edition of Lady Anne’s letters and have two lectures on the life of Lady Anne herself\, shedding new light on aspects of her life and revealing new thinking about her. Then we shall hear lectures on two of her contemporaries – her cousin once removed\, Elizabeth Boyle\, Countess of Cork\, who inherited the parts of the Clifford estates which eluded Lady Anne\, and a distant relative\, Alice Thornton. And we end with an account of another formidable Lady but of an older generation\, Bess of Hardwick\, the Countess of Shrewsbury\, of whom Lady Anne was almost certainly aware through her friendship with Bess’s granddaughters. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the conference. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrices \nYAS members with lunch – £40.00\nYAS members without lunch – £28.00 \nNon-members with lunch – £45.00\nNon-members without lunch – £33.00 \nStudent rate (students in School\, Further or Higher Education\, including tea\, coffee and lunch) – £20.00 \nTo book please follow this link – \nhttps://www.ticketsource.com/yahs/t-dkgvvqv

SUMMARY:Yorkshire’s hidden toxic legacy of historical metal mining: lead\, floods and health
DESCRIPTION:Mark G. Macklin\, Professor Emeritus of River Systems and Global Change\, University of Lincoln \nYorkshire’s historical lead mines have left a legacy that extends far beyond the abandoned mine sites themselves. Lead-contaminated sediments have been carried downstream and stored in river channels and floodplains\, where they can persist for centuries. When floods occur\, these sediments can be remobilised and redistributed across farmland\, gardens and other areas where people live and work\, creating risks to human\, animal and ecosystem health. \nDrawing on new research mapping the legacy of lead mining across Great Britain\, this lecture explores the scale and distribution of this largely hidden environmental hazard\, with a particular focus on Yorkshire. It will examine how toxic\, lead-contaminated sediments move through river systems\, how flooding can increase exposure\, and how contamination can enter ecosystems and food chains. It will also consider why current approaches that focus mainly on water quality and individual mine sites may underestimate the true extent of the problem\, and how climate change and increasing flood risk could make this historical legacy an emerging challenge for human\, animal and ecosystem health. Finally\, the lecture will explore what can be done to reduce exposure and manage this persistent environmental hazard. \nJoint Lecture with “PLACE” and  Royal Geographical Society\, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Committee

SUMMARY:[KMA] The Forgotten War: The Civil War in Yorkshire 1642-1643
DESCRIPTION:By Mike Turpin. \n  \nMost accounts of the English Civil War tend to concentrate on the southern counties between Oxford and London with perhaps a passing reference to the “Battle of Adwalton” near Bradford and of course refer to the decisive battle on Marston Moor. The talk then describes the engagements between the Royalists and Parliamentarians in mainly West and East Yorkshire culminating in the Battle of Adwalton.
